All the winners at the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards 2022

By TASTE, 21 November 2022

After three years, the prestigious Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards returned with a bang! Restaurateurs, their teams, celebs and foodies gathered at Grand West Arena on Sunday to celebrate the very best eateries in the country. Here are all the restaurants that won stars at the Awards, plus restaurant of the year and a host of special awards.

Glamorous outfits (with a definite emphasis on sequins), great food and camaraderie were the order of the day at the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards 2022 , as 800 people gathered on Sunday 20 November 2022 to celebrate the stars of the South African restaurant industry. The return of the awards marks a new chapter for the industry, which had a challenging three years during the pandemic.

The Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards 2022 also opened a new chapter by introducing a star rating system, instead of ranking restaurants in a top 20, which meant more restaurants across the spectrum of dining were honoured – from fine dining restaurants to more casual spots.

Guests were treated to a six-course meal created by top chefs from various restaurants that were perfectly paired with Woolworths' wines. The food was designed to trigger nostalgia in South African palates. Jackie Cameron turned out a cast of Durban-inspired appetisers with bites inspired by masala pineapple sold at street carts, bunny chow, and a sardine-run inspired fish cake. Baker Jason Lilley created a bread course that evoked garlic bread with a roasted garlic-infused loaf. Moses Moloi's starter featured a luscious trout ceviche with a fragrant coconut dressing. Vusi Ndlovu served a braaied chicken dish like no other – a take on chicken yassa; the Belly of the Beast team created an inspired take on pap en vleis with venison and Parmesan-laced pap, while Scott Parker of Woolworths Culinary Innovation Studio created a Melrose cheese-inspired Catalan for the cheese course. Dessert was an apple-themed triumph by Bertus Basson – starring an apple cake and realistic chocolate apples that cracked open to reveal a Cremora tart-inspired filling.

Acoustic Element, Lloyiso and Mi Casa performed throughout the event and many celebs, influencers and industry professionals graced the stage to hand out the awards.
